Mess House

The Coincidentals are exploring a new project: Mess House, a platform to bring new audiences and artists together in the intimate setting of someone’s house or apartment. By hosting performances in the comfortable space of someone’s home, Mess House gives permission to the audience to mingle, engage, and free themselves from the confines of a traditional theater. For artists, these events are an opportunity to explore new and site-specific works. The event combines the familiar structure of a house party with the presentation of new works of art in order to build a fun and safe space for connection between those that make art and those who enjoy witnessing it.

For Movement and Dance Artists:

We are seeking movement artists to create new works for this monthly series. Each artists will be given the opportunity to see the apartment or house where they will be performing in order to draw influence from witnessing someone's home space. We also encourage you to use the spatial limitations of the performance space to constrain or inform your piece. The work can be informal, improvisational, durational, or site specific, but should be a new piece with the context and spatial limitations of an apartment in mind. Performances will pop-up around various rooms of the apartment throughout the evening.

For All Types of Artists:

While The Coincidentals have a focus on movement, performance, and dance we are eager to make connections with all disciplines of artists. If you are an artist of any kind interested in showing or performing new works, we welcome you! There are no specific guidelines for submission, however we are interested in the ways that using home space as art space might inform your work. Please keep in mind the spatial limitations of a Chicago apartment and consider using this limitation as to constrain or inform your piece(s).

For All Human Beings:

We invite you to join us for drinks, dancing, music, mingling, and general merriment! Mess House is a free monthly event open to all. Since these events take place in private homes, please RSVP to each event for the address.

Stay tuned for Mess Houses this Fall!
